Fontworth Writers

 new author development specialists

Every year I visit lots of schools, libraries and bookshops. I worked as a primary school teacher for several years so I mostly work with children of primary school age. I also have experience of working with Gifted and Talented children and with reluctant writers.

I give talks to adult writers' groups, too, as well as running courses and workshops for aspiring writers. I have recently joined forces with bestselling author Pam Weaver to create Fontworth Writers, a company dedicated to providing affordable tuition for unpublished writers.

I live near Arundel in West Sussex, but I'm happy to travel.

Talks: My interactive talks about how to write brilliant stories are suitable for Year 2 to Year 7, with variations to suit each year group. I cover the essentials of planning a story, from the initial idea to the final scene, with tips on what turns a fairly ordinary story into a thumping good read. I aim to convey the excitement and joy of writing, and I'm always happy to answer questions.

Time required: 45 minutes - 1 hour

Suitable for whole year groups or single classes from Year 2 to Year 7.

Workshops: My aim is for everyone to discover that writing is fun! Workshops can cover:

  • plot planning
  • character development
  • settings
  • writing about emotions
  • creating atmosphere
  • building empathy
  • using music for inspiration
  • descriptive writing

Short writing tasks can be developed into longer pieces later.

Workshops can be geared to particular topics, such as the Victorians or the sea. I'm always happy to discuss a school's particular requirements.

Time required: 1 hour

Suitable for single classes from Year 1 (with help for less able writers) to Year 7.

Story telling: Making up a collective story with lots of audience participation. A fun session that stretches imaginations and results in a finished story without needing to write anything down!

Time required: 20 - 30 minutes

Suitable for single classes from Nursery to Year 1.

I'm always happy to visit libraries to talk to groups of children about being an author and to read short stories or book extracts.

I often attend bookshop events and love the chance to talk to young readers.
